GI Bill: Education Benefits Expanded for Millions of Veterans
Big news for veterans looking to further their education! The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has just updated its GI Bill policy, giving around 1.04 million veterans the chance to access an extra 12 months of education benefits. This change comes from a 2024 U.S. Supreme Court decision, a game-changer for veterans who have served in multiple periods.
What’s New with the GI Bill Benefits?
Previously, veterans with at least two periods of service could only use a combined total of 36 months of GI Bill benefits, splitting it between the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. But, with the new update, that cap has been lifted! Now, veterans are eligible for up to 48 months of benefits, which could mean an extra year of educational support for many.
Who Benefits From The GI Bill Update?
This change will likely affect around 1.04 million veterans who served under both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Whether you’re still in school or planning to return, this policy update gives you more time to complete your degree or certification.
The VA will automatically process claims for about 660,000 veterans. If you’re one of the remaining veterans who might qualify for the extra benefits, the VA will reach out to you with the steps to file a claim.
For many veterans, this change means you’ll get an additional 90 days on top of any remaining time you have left on your GI Bill benefits. This could be just the extra time you need to finish that degree, certification, or other educational goals.
