VA Launches Outreach Campaign to Boost Enrollment Amid Health Concerns from Blast Exposure
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is rolling out a new initiative to encourage all eligible veterans to enroll in VA health care, with a special focus on the nearly 1 million veterans who served in Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Addressing Health Concerns Linked to Blast Exposure
The outreach effort comes in response to growing concerns from veterans about health issues linked to repeated exposure to blasts during their service. These include not only physical injuries but also mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide, all potentially connected to exposure to artillery blasts, IEDs, missile launches, and other traumatic events. In response, the VA has been diving deep into research to better understand the potential long-term health effects of these exposures on veterans.

What Are The Benefits of Enrolling in VA Health Care?
For those already enrolled in VA health care, the benefits are clear. Veterans have access to specialized screenings and treatments for health problems that may be tied to blast exposure. Importantly, veterans who served in certain locations during conflicts can receive care based on their deployment, even if they haven’t been diagnosed with a service-related condition.
Initiatives To Help Veterans After Blast Exposure
This new outreach campaign is part of a broader effort that began after President Biden signed the PACT Act into law in 2022. Since the launch of the initiative, over 835,000 veterans have enrolled in VA health care, marking a 37% increase in enrollment. Moreover, more than 900,000 veterans have upgraded their priority status, reducing their out-of-pocket costs for care.
