How to Win Your VA Disability Claim
If you’re a disabled veteran, VA disability benefits can make a big difference in your life. But, receiving those benefits in a timely manner and securing the amount of benefits you deserve depends on you. The best thing you can do to make sure you submit the strongest, best-supported claim possible is to work with an experienced VA disability benefits advocate from the beginning.

Make sure you provide complete documentation and supporting evidence.
It’s up to you to show that you suffer from a disabling condition, that the condition is service-connected, and how serious your symptoms and limitations are. This may mean submitting evidence from your military records, your treating physicians, a medical expert, and people in your life who can speak to your condition.
Don’t leave service-connected conditions out of your claim.
You may have a single condition that is most serious and you believe is the reason you should receive VA disability benefits. But, if you have other service-connected disabilities or secondary-connected conditions, you’ll want to include everything. Leaving something out could mean a lower disability rating and lower benefits.

Keep your claim and documentation clear and organized.
It’s your job not just to put the evidence in front of the VA, but to organize and present it in a way that makes your condition, your service connection, and your degree of disability clear.

Don’t delay your claim.
The VA offers back pay, but in most cases only back to the date of your application or notice of intent to file. Say you become eligible for benefits in January of 2022, but don’t file your claim until July of 2023. Then, your claim is approved in March of 2024. You can receive back pay to cover the period between July of 2023 and when your claim was approved. But, you won’t get anything for the other 18 months when you were eligible but didn’t file.
Cooperate with all VA requests.
After you file your claim, the VA may request additional information from you, or may schedule you for a C&P exam. If you don’t promptly cooperate with these requests, your claim could be denied.
