VA Announces New Leadership Under Trump Administration
The VA has now named a handful of new political appointees under the Trump Administration, bringing in experienced leadership to help maintain critical services for veterans. Along with the leadership updates, the VA has also clarified which roles are exempt from the federal hiring freeze to ensure that key services aren’t disrupted.

Familiar Faces
Chris Syrek is returning to The Department Of Veterans Affairs as Chief of Staff. Having served as Deputy Chief of Staff during the first Trump Administration, he is no stranger to this role. In the past, he has played a key part in pushing through major reforms, including the VA MISSION Act and improvements to claims processing.
Cheryl Mason is also coming back to the VA, this time as Senior Advisor to the Secretary. Mason previously led the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, where she helped reduce the backlog of legacy appeals and improved the output of decisions.
Meanwhile, Lynda Davis is taking the reins at the Veterans Experience Office. She’ll continue to focus on improving veterans’ trust and their overall experience with The Department Of Veterans Affairs. Davis is already behind successful initiatives like the VSignals feedback system and the White House VA Hotline.
Key Advisory Roles
The Department Of Veterans Affairs has also named several new appointees to key advisory and communications positions, including Karen Brazell, Curt Cashour, Lavin Gartland, Danielle Runyan, John Bartrum, and Morgan Ackley. Many of these advisors have prior experience within the VA or come from strong backgrounds in veterans’ advocacy.

Hiring Freeze Exemptions: What Does It Mean?
In addition to the leadership changes, The Department Of Veterans Affairs clarified how the federal hiring freeze, signed by President Trump in January 2024, will affect their staffing. The freeze will not apply to critical positions in healthcare and public safety, ensuring that veterans continue to receive the care and services they need.
