Dependency and Indemnity Compensation Rates for 2024
Dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC) is a monetary benefit payable to some survivors of disabled veterans. Both the deceased veteran and the dependent must meet certain requirements. The veteran must have either died on active duty or in training, died due to a service-connected condition, or have been eligible for 100% VA disability benefits or TDIU for a certain period before their death.
The requirements for dependents differ depending on the relationship of the dependent to the deceased veteran. The categories of dependents who may be eligible for DIC benefits include:
- Surviving spouses who meet certain criteria
- Unmarried minor children
- Unmarried children under the age of 23 who are in school
- Surviving parents who meet certain criteria
The amount of benefits also varies depending on the relationship of the recipient to the deceased veteran.
DIC Benefit Rates
Like other veterans benefits, DIC compensation rates are adjusted annually. In 2024, the base DIC benefit for a surviving spouse is $1,612.74/month. However, that amount may be increased for any of several different reasons, including:
- If the deceased veteran had a 100% VA disability rating or TDIU classification for at least 8 years prior to their death, and the surviving spouse was married to the veteran throughout those 8 years, or
- The surviving spouse has dependent children under the age of 18, or
- The surviving spouse qualifies for aid and attendance or a housebound allowance

DIC Benefits for Surviving Children
Determining the benefits available for a surviving child is much more complicated. For example, the monthly amount for a child under the age of 18 is different from the amount for a child 18 or older who is still in school. And, the amount payable for a minor child is higher if there is no surviving spouse. However, in that case, the per-child amount decreases when there are more surviving children. An experienced VA disability benefits advocate can explain exactly what benefits may be available in your situation.
DIC Benefits for Surviving Parents
Unlike other surviving family members, surviving parents are eligible for DIC benefits only if they meet income qualifications. The amount of compensation available depends on the parent’s or parent’s income, whether one or both parents are alive, and whether the parents are married.
