Can I Get VA Disability for Tendonitis?
A veteran may be able to get VA disability benefits for any service-connected illness or medical condition that causes sufficient symptoms or limitations. Usually, VA disability ratings are based on schedules found in the Code of Federal Regulations. However, it is often possible to secure VA disability benefits even if a condition isn’t listed specifically.
Tendonitis in Veterans
Tendonitis is a type of tendinopathy. The condition may be caused by repetitive stress, exposure to vibrations, sudden injury, and other types of movement. Common symptoms include pain when moving the joint or affected limb, stiffness, a popping in the joint, tenderness and swelling.
Tendonitis may occur in any tendon in the body. Some of the joints most commonly affected include the elbow, shoulder, Achilles tendon and knee. Veterans are particularly at risk for tendonitis in the lower extremities.

How Does the VA Rate Tendonitis?
The VA rates tendonitis based on the limitation of motion caused by the condition. The applicable rating schedule differs depending on the affected body part, and the VA disability rating will depend on the degree of limitation. In some cases, the rating will also differ depending on whether the body part affected is the dominant one.
For example, tendonitis of the elbow is generally rated under diagnostic codes 5206, 5207 and 5208, all addressing movement of the forearm. The VA disability rating assigned may be as low as 0% (when flexion is limited to 110 degrees) or as high as 50%. A 50% VA disability rating will be assigned when either:
- Flexion is limited to 45 degrees in the dominant forearm, or
- Extension of the dominant forearm is limited to 100%
Alternatively, if a rating isn’t warranted under the diagnostic codes listed above, a veteran may qualify for a 10% or 20% rating under diagnostic code 5024.
